Medicare
Applications
People approaching age 65 who have no plans to retire, but who still want the full protection of Medicare, will benefit from a change in the law.
Under the old law, a person who wanted Medicare hospital insurance protection had to apply for social security retirement or survivor benefits to get it even though he or she did not plan to retire.
Under the new law. people can apply only for Medicare hospital insurance. They still, however, must meet the requirements for retirement or survivor benefits.
In addition, a husband or wife can qualify for hospital insurance on his or her spouse's record at 65. even though the spouse does not retire, provided both are eligible for monthly benefits.
Another provision of the new law allows a person who applied for retirement or survivor benefits just to get hospital insurance to withdraw his or her application for cash benefits and still keep Medicare protection in effect.
