Bison, often called the American buffalo, have made a successful comeback from near extinction in the late 1800s when their numbers dwindled from millions to fewer than 50 in the United States. Through stricter laws and enforcement, there are now some 55,000 bison here and another 10,000 in Canada, National Geographic World reports.
