Marx objected vehemently to being subjected to questioning from Douglas under any conditions. He reported that he’d been warned by deputies from the Rappahannock sheriff’s department that after his release on bond Douglas had threatened “he would finish the job.” The case has continued for two years with “interminable periods when nothing at all was going on” while Douglas’ sanity was questioned, Marx said. He told the judge that Douglas has harassed members of his family, moved onto his property, looted and burglarized his house and justified all his actions with “crazy excuses” that Marx was a communist. "I object to someone whose sanity is under question cross examining me,” Marx said,, noting that Douglas has written letters threatening the President of the United States. “It seems to me that what we’re doing (in allowing Douglas to serve as his own counsel) is just encouraging him” and providing the defendant with an opportunity for "emptying his vituperative against the authority structure.”
