out me winner in November will serve only a single year in the House of Delegates rather than the :ustomary two year term. Last Tuesday, a special threejudge federal court found Virginia’s redistricting plan unconstitutional on the grounds of unacceptable population variances between districts. Since election machinery is already in place, the judges agreed to let balloting proceed on schedule but limited the terms of delegates elected this November to one year.
The court gave Virginia’s General Assembly one year to come up with a new redistricting plan, recommending strongly that it include 100 single member districts. If the legislature fails to act, the court may impose its own plan.
In addition to political matters taken up at Monday night’s mass meeting, county Democrats began planning for a fund-raiser to be held this fall.
