Our local rescue squads need assistance immediately!
Federal grants to upgrade emergency medical care in rural areas are ending. On October 1,1981, Virginia will receive a Federal block grant for its many social programs. There will be strong competition for portions of these funds.
Already, the Virginia General Assembly has restricted funds in the Department of Highway Safety so that they no longer can be used to help emergency units. This money has been used primarily for ambulances and communications.
Even Virginia’s Rescue Squad Assistance Fund of approximately $1 million for the entire State may fie eliminated. County and town financial support cannot provide enough dollars to maintain present equipment, buy supplies, fuel for ambulances, etc.
Our rescue squad personnel are volunteers who constantly train to improve and to upgrade their skills for emergency medical care. Their instructors are also volunteers. Rescue squad members are ready to help us on a 24-hour schedule. One never knows when he or she may become a victim of an accident or sudden illness.
