“Heart warming'* were the words new superintendent Robert Estabrook chose to describe the scene at Rappahannock County Elementary School on the first day of classes last Thursday.
“I was particularly pleased with the organization," Estabrook said.
Bus drivers had kindergartners at the 'front of the buses and released them first Teachers and aides were waiting at each discharge point to escort the children to the gym and then to their classes. "There was good anticipation that those little rascals would be apprehensive. It was heart warming to watch the aides and teachers hugging and reassuring the little ones...I saw a couple of youngsters with their lips puckered until the teachers and the aides reached them but I was only aware of one little fellow who cried,” the superintendent said.
“Obviously, the elementary staff was prepared and organized very well. They added a nice human touch to the first day of school,” he noted.
Assistant superintendent Gerald Lysik was equally impressed with the smooth operations and friendly atmosphere he noticed at the high school on opening day. “The kids were having quite a time getting back together again,” he said, but noted that after greeting old friends, students moved quietly and efficiently to home rooms.
