Douglas is not willing to allow a lawyer to represent him, the judge said, adding that he was “hamstrung and strapped” by Supreme Court rulings from doing anything about that refusal.
Robertson assured Marx that if Douglas becomes disruptive to court proceedings, he will terminate his right to represent himself. The judge noted that Douglas must behave in court as an attorney would.
Marx continued his objections, reporting that Douglas has repeatedly identified him as both Daniel Elsburg, accused in the theft several years ago of the Pentagon Papers, and John D. Marx, a writer. Douglas’ threats against his life as well as his taking of Marx’s belongings “shows the man is not in possession of his reason,” Marx said.
