Fodderstack Classic in 1979.
This year's race had a few unexpected entries beside the 213 two-legged runners who regisiered. At Horseshoe Hollow, a white horse joined the racers, galloping through the ranks until captured and returned to his pasture.
Then when the runners reached the Washington side of Lee hill, they met an old hog ambling along on the left side of the road like any good pedestrian, according to race organizer Diane Bruce. "The pig got an early start. He was up there at about 10:10!” she reported. On the more serious side, several runners needed medical attention for dehydration and hypervenilation. All were treated either by rescue personnel or the Rappahannock clinic staff.
