When she returned 10 her cell following interrogation. Newman said, she cut her wrists "because 1 was suffering from drug pain.” At that point, she was taken to the hospital, she added.

Before signing the statement admitting to tier part in the burglary ring, Newman acknowledged that she was advised anti understood that she had the right to remain silent and have an attorney present. But she maintained that she hadn't been told a lawyer would be appointed for her if she couldn't afford one. If she had been so advised. "I would have asked for an attorney," Newman said.

As to why she made the statement admitting her guilt, Newman explained that she was "really confused" and "didn't know what was happening." From November 18 until last Thursday, she added, she has not had any drugs.

Under cross examination. Newman acknowledged that Rappahannock deputy John Godlewski was one of the police officers in the room during her interrogation. She said, however, that she talked with investigator Dorsey before Godlewskis arrival.

Newman said she had understood she could remain silent and could have an attorney present. "But 1 didn’t know if \ had io pay for one." In response to questions from .CpmmonweallftT Attorney Douglas Baumgardner, Newman agreed that she'd neither been ottered drugs nor beaten by police while in custody.
