Medical Help Sought
She testified that she requested medical attention, asking the Culpeper jail's matron if she could see a doctor, and was told "not yet." The following morning, when nausea prevented her from eating, she asked again for a doctor and again was denied medical attention, the defendant said.
Then the morning of September 1, she was taken to the office of Culpeper police investigator. According to Newman, she asked an inspector Dorsey if she could see a doctor.
She described her condition at the time as "sweating and shaking from withdrawal" and said she told Dorsey she was “really hurling, feeling awful" and that she didn’t want to talk to anyone.
Also, Newman testified, she asked the investigator if she could see a drug abuse counselor and was told again "not yet.”
Under questioning by her court-appointed attorney Sharon Luke, Newman said that before she made her confession, Dorsey promised her a bondsman. In addition, she told' the judge that a second investigator said she would “never get another hit of drugs", that authorities
