Dennis Wingfield can be proud of the job he’s done as principal of Rappahannock County High School for the past 16 years. The ringing endorsements he’s received from parents, teachers and students stand as testimonials to his efforts to provide an atmosphere in which quality education can take place.
He received high marks from his superiors for 15 of those 16 years. Letters read at last week’s school board meeting from former superintendents 0. A. Norton and William Bloomer praised his performance as outstanding.
Rappahannock’s new superintendent apparently has decided otherwise after nine months on the job. It is clear that Robert Estabrook wouldn’t have made a recommendation that Wingfield not be rehired as principal without receiving prior concurrence from the school board. And once that concurrence was given, it’s clear that the board couldn’t have reversed its decision without leaving the superintendent in an untenable position.
