He pointed out that Ethical Canon 2-28 of the Virginia State Bar's Code of Professional Responsibility states that “every lawyer, regardless of professional promi nence or professional workload, should find time to participate in serving the disadvantaged. The rendition of free legal services to those unable to pay reasonable fees continues to be an obligation of each lawyer but the efforts of individual lawyers are often not enough to meet the need."
In this regard Botts noted that the generous time to be contributed under the pro bono program would likely be the equivalent of about one-fourth to one-third of a full-time legal aid staff attorney.
The remaining Culpeper staff attorney, Stephanie Ridder, stated that she was looking forward to working with the private bar n its pro bono efforts.
She explained that she would continue to maintain an active caseload of her own, but admitted that her ability to cover five counties would be limited at best.
She hopes to make the best use of her time by seeing as many clients as possible on at least an “advice only” basis.
