To the editor:
In the wake of recent School Board decisions that have left teachers in despair, I feel compelled to express some of the thoughts weighing most heavily on me.
Public schools are the roots of the plant of democracy in this country. Cut off these roots and the plant will die.
The public schools through integration have provided an equal, free education for children of all races and creeds. The public schools provide special free education for the mentally retarded, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, gifted, and talented, that they might contribute their skills to society.
In the public schools the tenant farmer’s child sits next to the corporate executive’s child. In this atmosphere not only do they learn to read and write, but also to value one another.
Each time an intelligent, innovative college student chooses to work in private industry rather than to teach, education is hurt. Why should be expect intelligent young people to flock to a profession where after a lifetime of work, a Ph.D., and 25 years experience, they may be earning $16,000 a
