At the same time, the manner in which Wingfield’s demotion was handled casts doubt on evaluation procedures which are supposed to be designed to improve staff performance.
According to unchallenged statements made at the board meeting last week, Wingfield never received notice from the superintendent that his work wasn’t satisfactory prior to the letter announcing he would not be recommended for the principal’s post. If Wingfield wasn’t doing his job properly, how could he try to improve his efforts if he didn’t know he was doing anything wrong? Can ail staff members now expect the same summery treatment?
We think the board and the superintendent made a mistake in deciding to demote Dennis Wingfield. But if they were dead set on removing the veteran principal, they could have at least kept up a pretense that the action was taken in response to a fair and impartial evaluation of his performance.
