The track teams from Rappahannock needed a wheelbarrow to cart off the medals won at the Stonewall Jackson Relays held Saturday in Mt. Jackson.
Competing against 12 schools, some with AA ranking, the Panthers came home with 21 medals in one of the best performances ever by both the boys and girls contingents at the annual event, according to Coach Ann Spieker.
Katheryn Davis, Cristol Porter, Raynetta Gheen and Kim Williams bought home third place bronze medals for both the 440 relay and the 880 medley relay events. A bronze also went to Marie Davis for her throw of 95 feet in the shotput.
Coach Bill Child reported that his boys pulled in 12 individual medals, and in the process shattered three RCHS records.
The 880 relay team of Jeff Porter, Carl Frye, Glenn Fletcher and Eugene Grigsby sped to a second place finish in a time of 1:38.8. and then finished third in the 440 relay in 47.1 seconds, well below the old school record of 48.8 seconds.
‘‘The boys were so excited,” said Spieker. “As soon as they knew they’d taken second place in the 440, they took off across the field and leaped over the judges’ table!”
