Public Service Downgraded
Somehow, in this election year, the whole idea of public service seems to have become downgraded in our collective perception. Perhaps, in our electionridden Commonwealth, we are suffering from a sort of political burn-out.
Its effect can be felt in the precincts and through the party organizations. It seems to pervade the electoral process.
Public service is indeed a lot of trouble. The hours are endless, political campaigns are exhausting, criticism is inevitable, and the pay is meager compared to what really good talent, political or otherwise, can demand in private employment.
And yet a United States Senate seat is open in Virginia! It is an opportunity to serve boldly and help mold policy at the pinnacle of the Republic’s government. It is a chance to shape history and to reclaim Virginia's once proud place of leadership in its pages.
