Smithsonian Coordinator of Public Information Larry Taylor said that the estimated 1,000 native deer presenting both an overpopulation and disease problem to the Center’s more exotic animals would thus be free to leave for a less-crowded area.
“There will be no hunting on the Conservation Center’s grounds,” Taylor said, from his office in Washington.
The Smithsonian had held a hunt in 1980 and 1981 to help check the white-tail population. The deer had over-grazed the alfalfa fields needed for support of the endangered species held at the Center, and had harbored a parasite harmless to them but fatal to the reindeer and other exotic deer species there.
