Rappahannock residents attended
hearings before the State Corporation Commission on a proposal by the Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) to stretch a network of high voltage power lines through Rappahannock and neighboring counties.
In the Rappahannock News of March 29, 1963 it was reported that the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection said that the powerlines were unwanted and unneeded and would harm the uniquely untouched Rappahannock countryside. RLEP was ah intervenor in the court action against Vepco.
Also testifying against construction of the lines were Commonwealth Attorney George Davis, Supervisor Newbill Miller, Huntly resident Ed Harris and Eileen Day who said, “Once you take away our beauty, you destroy our economic base.”
Raquel Welch was appearing in Kansas City Bomber at the Front Royal Drive-In Theater.
The Washington Volunteer Fire Department had acquired a water wagon, which carried approximately 1,500 gallons of water, at a cost of $2,000.
