After a short search by the entire pack, Gangster hit and off went the whole shebang.
There, far-far away from his own territory and after one and a half hours of driving pursuit that great red fox elected to put on a display of super speed, so swift that eveiy hound and every horse still in the race was going flat out. He sped over a generous loop of country . through Sandra Forbush’s farm and back to Black Rock. There he gave a full view of himself, then he nipped behind a barn and into a milling herd of Angus. In the midst of the geneal confusion, he disappeared without a trace.
Left with our two Masters and Staff were nine hardy stayers: Kitty Smith and Muffin Day of Piedmont; Polly Baldwin, Dr. Will Allison and Helen Helmuth of Warrenton, Adrian Burke, Fred Brooks, Mollie and Dick Wolf of O.D.H. All said “uncle.”
After this, horses that had been the whole way or the major part of the run were cooked. Staff and Field peacefully started a leisurely trek back to the meet, gathering several groups of lost and envious hunters along the way. Suddenly, Wham! like a 21-gun salute, the whole pack gave voice and charged after another red, making woods ring and leaves rattle.
“First Flighters” were boiled out from their l4Yz mile go, but the ‘Lost Brigades’ had fresh horses and were lusting for a chase. Off they tore folowing a couple of veterans to whom Zeke handed over the Field, Judy Gilman and Mary Jamieson. 45 minutes of classic run ensued. This second fox lead hounds on two huge circles, over fields, through woods, along branches, over cliffs, finally returning to his point of departure. As if an after thought and as a gesture of courtesy to the hunt, he led hounds back toward the Barr Farm where he did a foxy thing and took French leave.
What more can be asked of hounds than a stellar double header for New Year’s Day?
