When she heard the bulldozer approaching on November 9, Kidwell said, she asked Buntin for help because she was afraid that Spellman “was going to destroy our property...He said he did not want to mess with Ranee Spellman...(that in previous instances)he didn’t like the way Patricia Saltonstall and Ranee Spellman reacted.”
According to Kidwell, Buntin advised her to get a trespass warrant if Spellman ventured onto her property and said only that he would call the deceased’s employer.
“I made a decision that I had to go down and protect our property,” Kidwell told the jury, adding that she was afraid her husband, sons or brother would go if she didn’t. “I was afraid for my husband. I was afraid for my brother. I was afraid for my children. I had to do something.”
