his life. Grieving and visible anguish are so unacceptable that many parents whose children have died are unaware that their feelings are shared until they find someone who has suffered the same loss.

Compassionate Friends offers friendship and understanding to bereaved parents. According to the group’s literature, its purposes are to promote and aid parents in the positive resolution of their grief and to foster the physical and emotional health of bereaved parents and siblings.

Membership is open to parents who have experienced the death of a child. The term “membership” is used loosely as there is little formal organization and no dues are charged. Some parents come once or twice; some come over alonger period of time. And still others continue with the group to give support to new members.

The local group meets once monthly at St. James Episcopal Church in Warrenton. The structure of the meetings is informal: “No one has to talk if they don’t want to,” said Linda. “And only one person in a couple may come if the other doesn’t care to.”
