On the other side of the ledger, Cox reported on an increase in expenditures over the amount called for in the advertised budget. Due to an error in arithmetic arising from computations of reductions made by the supervisors to proposed school spending, the bottom line on total costs for the county’s educational programs is $20,368 more than advertised. The $20,368 increase is necessary to provide the three percent raises for administrators and four percent raises for other school employees which were endorsed by the board of supervisors, Cox explained.
He suggested that the board delay adoption of the county budget and finalization of the tax rate for 198384 until the last week in June. By then, Cox said, final approval of the sheriffs budget should have arrived from the State Compensation Board and the picture on the size of the deficit in the current fiscal year should be clearer, giving the board a better idea on how much can be trimmed from the proposed 48 cent rate.
The board set a special meeting on budget approval and tax rate adoption Cor June 27 at 9 a.m. in the courthouse.
