In the PIK program, where a late spring or early summer seeding is made to provide a cover for no-till seedings in late summer, foxtail millet will germinate much more quickly than pearl millet. It also has a shorter growth, provides a more densely-covered field, and lacks significant growth after being mowed.
In fields not in PIK but needing a cover crop that will also provide grazing and high quality, easy to cure hay. foxtail millet fits well. No-till alfalfa and other forages can be established easily in the weed-free, friable soil after the millet is removed. If high yields and multiple cuttings are the goal, pearl millet would be a better choice.
