The referendum was set for Tuesday, June 17, two weeks before the expiration of terms of school board members A.Y. Stokes from Piedmont District and chairman Beverly Massie from Jackson.
Reeve Named
The electoral trustees met May 5, reappointing Massie unanimously and replacing Stokes with Nancy Reeve in a split decision, C. E. Johnson opposed to her appointment.
Then, the trustees reconvened May 28 to consider their earlier, invalid appointments of Eldred and Eastham. They were presented with petitions signed by 255 residents of Wakefield District in support of Guy Poster's appointment. In addition, Wakefield Supervisor Hubert Gilkey added his support for Poster. A petition with 25 names in favor of retaining Eastham was presented as well.
Granville Eastham and chairman C.E. Johnson joined forces to reappoint Robert Eastham in a split decision with Christine Johnston opposed. The two also united to replace Eldred with Newbill Miller by a second 2-1 vote.
