Sheep producers have voted to continue deductions from Commodity Credit Corporation wool incentive payments to finance promotion of wool, according to Linda Henry, county executive director of the Warren and Rappahannock offices of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS).
Preliminary returns show that of the producers voting in the referendum, 62.2 percent, owning 68.7 percent of the sheep, favored continuing advertising and other market development programs under a proposed new agreement between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Sheep Producers Council, Inc. A majority of local producers voted in favor of the program. In Virginia, 607 producers, owning 48,303 sheep voted in favor of the program; and 256 producers owning 20,672 sheep voted against it. .
