“The problem of transportation in Virginia is extremely critical and must be attended to immediately. Our transportation needs have been neglected for too long,” said Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter, Jr., last week.
“The Virginia Study Commission on Transportation appointed by Governor Baliles has identified those needs and has estimated that $10 billion over the next ten years is required to take care of those needs. I believe such estimates are sound.
“I appreciate the leadership and initiative of Governor Baliles on this subject. The Commission has suggested several alternatives for financing of the needed improvements and I am confident that the Governor and the General Assembly will be able to agree on legislation for the necessary revenue measures.
“On the Federal level, last year and a few years ago, I supported legislation in the Congress to promptly distribute to the states funds now in the Federal Highway Trust Fund - about $9 billion - which cannot be used for any purpose other than transportation funding. Unfortunately, this legislation was defeated,” Congressman Slaughter continued.
“A policy of prompt distribution of highway trust funds would mean substantial assistance to the financing of state transportation improvements now and in the future. I shall certainly continue to advocate and support this policy,” he promised.
