The Virginia Taxpayers Association is calling for a general election referendum on the General Assembly’s final multi#billion road program “because of the extraordinary cost obligated over a period of years, the fact that the proposed transportation board with a big new slush fund for northern Virginia Metro and other purposes takes away responsibility of elected legislators, and because we must be sure the citizens of this state really want to pay for something of is magnitude.”
The state taxpayer organization, meeting September 13 in Charlottesville, added that a “strong further reason is that the General Assembly really does not represent the citizens of this state, as shown again by a poll conducted this past spring for the largest audience TV station in western Virginia. The poll, taken for station WDBJ (Channel 7), Roanoke, found that on a number of key 1986 issues, state legislators in the large surrounding area had not voted in accordance with sentiment of their own constituents.”
“VTA proved the same thing when we beat the General Assembly last session on a constitutional amendment they had passed the previous year adding undesirable politics in the governor’s office. That’s why VTA is strongly backing House Joint Resolution 123 in next year’s session implementing the right of initiative and referendum on a regular basis.”
