Raymond Gooch’s application and color scheme for repainting the log cabin he recently purchased, located on Gay Street next to the Gay Street Inn was also approved unanimously. Mrs. Miller noted that Mr. Gooch had also made his color selections from a paint manufacturer’s color chart recommended by the ARB.
The application also included Mr. Gooch’s plans to replace the existing doors and windows with custom wood doors (with window panels) and windows.
The board’s approval of Mr. Gooch’s application followed a brief discussion of the unusual color combination which he had selected. The body of the house will be painted brownish-red, the trim beige and the roof a chocolate brown.
Mrs. Willis said that Mr. Gooch had been “sensitive in choosing colors; that they match the mortar” already on the house.
Mr. Gooch replied that “I tried to match the color to the type of house - it’s been a working class house for most of its existence.”
Mrs. Willis cautioned that “. . . this is going to be controversial . . . No log cabin in town - or in the county - has ever been painted these colors. . . . People will call and tell you about it.”
“I just don’t want people copying it!” Mr. Gooch retorted.
Mr. Thomasson added that “It is a combination from approved charts; and it is a combination with historical significance.”
In addition to approving his application, the board also commended Mr. Gooch for the nice job he had done in cleaning up and landscaping the property.
Mrs. Miller also questioned the whereabouts of the plans and the certificates of approval for Jimmy DeBergh’s log cabin construction on Gay Street. The project was approved at the ARB’s meeting on March 20, Mrs. Miller recalled, but she thought that Mr. DeBergh had requested that he get the proposals back so he could copy them, and that they would be returned.
