Wakefield School in Huntly was informed last week that it has the highest percentage of National Merit Semifinalists in its senior class of any school, public and private, in Virginia.
With four semifinalists out of a senior class numbering 28, Wakefield has a percentile of 14.3 percent, just slightly ahead of Norfolk Academy, which has 14 semifinalists in a class of 101 or 13.9 percent.
By comparison, other area schools such as Fauquier High School and Culpeper County High School had one semifinalist each; Woodberry Forest, two, and Handley High School in Winchester, three. All of these schools have much larger senior classes than Wakefield,
Reportedly, the best percentile in the nation was achieved by St. Anselm-Abbey School in Washington, D.C., which had a total of eight semifinalists out of a senior class of 23, or 34.8 percent.
National Merit Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each state on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude/ National Merit Qualifying Test and represent less than one-half of one percent of a state’s secondary school graduating seniors.
