With all the smoke, the fire was visible only as a dim glow until we got close to it. The heat, however, was evident long before we saw the fire. The purpose of the maze training became obvious, because only the immediate area around the fire was illuminated. The rest of the building was black as night.
Chief Huff had the group stand straight up to experience the temperature difference between floor and ceiling. As hot as it was close to the floor, it was cool compared to the ceiling. After pausing a moment to become accustomed to the environment, Chief Huff directed our attack on the fire.
Each person took a turn on the nozzle, and the steam’s effect on the fire was immediate. We “kissed the floor” as the steam blanket rolled across the room, the hot moist air biting at the tiny areas of exposed skin on my neck. Water dripped off our helmets and down our masks as the steam condensed on our relatively cool equipment.
After four trips inside the smokehouse, the progress of our team in handling the hose and our increased ability to move around inside the building was obvious. It was also apparent that my partners and I were feeling more familiar and at ease with the breathing apparatus. The
