The Rappahannock High School cross-country teams continued to show the competition their heels by defeating AA-ranked Warden County on its home course, a 2.85 mile loop with a record of 16:38 set last year.
The boys varsity team finished well ahead of the competition with 24 points to Warren County’s 31.
Rappahannock’s Marley Hay and Doug Yeabower from Warren dueled for first place until Hay made his move on a small hill and pulled away to maintain a narrow lead for the rest of the race. Hay’s winning time of 17:18 bested Yeabower by a mere five seconds.
Jonathan Watson (17:59) and Neil Burke (18:54) finished third and fourth. Rodney Grimsley, who began the season running 10th for the team, finished seventh overall and fourth for the Panthers in 19:43, making him the most improved runner for the meet, according to Coach Ann Spieker. John Dodson ran 9th overall, crossing the tape at 19:50.
Eighth grader Matthew Eidson ran an impressive race, finishing sixth for the Rappahannock team in 20:43, although he ran unofficially. He is not eligible for varsity competition until he enters the ninth grade next year.
Warren County was unable to field a full team in the girls race. The Rappahannock girls ran well, with Bonnie Grimsley (23:52), Denice Eidson (24:38), Kathy Dodson (25:15), Annette Mueller (25:56), Leslie Nichols (30:04) and Amy Bartlett (30:04) finishing in that order. Coach Spieker said that Denice Eidson had the most improved race, staying right up with Rappahannock’s number one runner, Bonnie Grimsley.
