While Mrs. Quaintance was teaching us to behave, work our hardest, and never be quitters, Mrs. Winfrey was helping us discover .that the great writers aren’t great because some dull academicians ruled in their favor but because their stories and poems are moving, fascinating and fun. Long before we knew that integration was coming, or even what the word meant, she was teaching us through our Literature and Life books and her example to appreciate people of every race and in every walk of life. .
Do any of your readers remember with me her efforts to help a classroom of healthy, active young people grasp the meaning of the line from Milton’s On His Blindness: “They also serve who only stand and wait.”
I believe many Sperryville High graduates can say as I do that while I have had the privilege of studying under a number of outstanding teachers in several colleges, I don’t think all of them combined have influenced my character and my life as have Mrs. Quaintance and Mrs. Winfrey.
