Open government
The Washington Town Council should be commended for the example it set last week by conducting deliberations concerning the hiring of a town attorney in public session; as opposed to retiring into executive session as they could have done under Virginia law.
Certainly all matters of government cannot be conducted in public session —indeed there are some things which should absolutely be protected: such as the deliberations of Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts. But most of government should be done under the gaze of the public — after ali, the public elected most of the officials — they are entitled to know how the decisions which affect their lives come about.
Everyone should recognize the desire of the Washington Town Council to open as much of the town’s business to the public as possible. They deserve the support of all the town’s residents in their efforts to encourage more citizen participation in the decisions which affect their lives.
Perhaps their example will serve as a reminder to other officials, be they local, state or national, that the public deserves to know what their elected officials are doing.
