In addition to the four semifinalists, six other Wakefield seniors were named National Merit Commended Students, narrowly missing the higher semifinalist designation.
In commenting on his students’ success, Wakefield headmaster William Lynn emphasized that while schools and families play an important role in National Merit success, it is the individual student who is being recognized for exceptional performance. When asked if he felt that Wakefield’s curriculum gave students an edge in the competition, Mr. Lynn replied that he does believe that large doses of vocabulary study, critical writing, analytical grammar and mathematical problem solving stand the student in good stead for the examination.
“Obviously,” Mr. Lynn said, “scholastic ability, as well as family and community attitudes toward academic achievement, is also an important factor, but I honestly believe that any hardworking student of average abilities, given the right preparation and outside stimulus, can make the grade.” Mr. Lynn reported that for the past five years, Wakefield has been averaging about three Merit Semifinalists per year out of senior classes ranging from 25 to 30 students. •
