Middle Street Gallery will be holding its second annual Valentine’s Show, this year entitled “Art from the Heart," with an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. This.marks the first anniversary of Middle Street Gallery functioning as an artists’ cooperative. The Gallery will be closed during January for renovations.

Sock hop at RCES

A “Snow Ball” sock hop will be held Friday, Jan. 16, at Rappahannock County Elementary School from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Admission is $1 per person with a $5 maximum per family. All elementary children and parents are invited.

‘The Color Purple9

The Color Purple will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 17, and Sunday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 both evenings. The movie stars Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Avery, Rae Dawn Chong and Adolph Caesar. Spielberg’s most .powerful and personal film to date caused a controversy within the Academy and among black groups and thrust comedienne Whoopi Goldberg and talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey into the public limelight. All the performances won praise in the telling of Alice Walker’s story of women struggling against racial and sexual oppression in the rural south. Like Goldberg’s comic sketches, The Color Purple shows us the worst in human nature while remaining warm and hopeful. The movie is rated PG. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

Landscape design school

A three-day landscape design school will be held Jan. 19-21 at the River Ridge Mall Community Room in Lynchburg. The three-day course will cover many aspects of landscaping, from the design stage through planting. The course is co-sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, the Virginia Tech Horticulture Department and the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs.
