Then along came Representative James Wright of Texas, the Democratic choice to succeed lip O'Neil as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Wright, the Washington Post reports, has asserted “Style” and “Agenda.” How one “asserts an Agenda” remains a little vague in the Post article. Wright’s asserted “agenda” was almost immediately rejected by other Democratic leaders of the House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, there is agenda trouble at other levels of government. The New York Times in a headline asks the critical question, “Has Scandal Derailed Koch’s Agenda?” The mayor insists that the agenda has not been derailed, but it has been delayed.
Agenda gaps, and lack of agendas, are not distinctively and solely American. They occur, if a gap or lack of an agenda can be said to occur, in foreign cultures as well as here in the United States - in China, for example. Washington Post Foreign Correspondent Daniel Southerland says that the Chinese student protestors do have at least a short range agenda, but the Post headline says that a long-term agenda is lacking.
The problem has not gone unnoticed by the Christmas specialty trade; Camalier and Buckley of Washington, D. C. - one of the better leather goods retail stores of the country — offered among its preChristmas goods a (gather covered “agenda” with a clip. The agenda, crafted by the German firm of GoldPfeill, offered before Christmas at $100 per agenda, may now be on sale at reduced prices.
