deal arranged by Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter H. Luke, in exchange for Eastham’s testimony for the prosecution against several codefendants in the burglary. Eastham was the last of the defendants to be sentenced.
Several witnesses testified as to Eastham’s rehabilitation in the months following his arrest. Bobby Brown, a Washington, Va., building contractor who employs Eastham, said that he is “very dependable, does good work, is willing to learn.” Asked if the charges against Eastham would affect his status, Mr. Brown replied, “No sir. As long as he does the work, he has a job. (If he goes to jail) after he gets out, he hasajob.”
Mr. Brown added, “I feel that he has spent a lot of time studying what happened and he has paid mentally a lot for it.”
State Trooper H. A. Newlin, who with Rappahannock County Sheriffs Deputy John Facchina conducted the investigation, said that “Mr. Eastham was very cooperative with Deputy Facchina and myself. He gave written and recorded statements which assisted us in certain aspects of the case ... He was very honest in what he told us . . .
