seminar set
A one-day seminar on woodland management being sponsored by the Lord Fairfax Soil & Water Conservation District will be held Jan. 23 from 9:30 to 2:30 at the Northern Virginia 4-H Education Center, Front Royal.
The program has been designed to promote good resource management on private timberlands. Other participating agencies are the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries, Division of Soil and Water Conservation and Westvaco.
Statewide, the productivity of non-industrial forestland averages only 55 percent of its potential. Many landowners are unaware of forestry and wildlife management opportunities that can realize both short-run and long-run incomes.
Persons wishing to attend the seminar are asked to pre-register by calling your local Extension Office by Jan. 16.
Topics to be covered during the seminar include: The Gypsy Moth - How it Affects Private Thnberland Management; The Benefits of Marginal Lands Conversion to Forests;the New Tax Bill and Woodlands; Basics of Woodland Management; Selling Your Timber Without Getting Taken to the Mill; Forest Management Alternatives including Shiitake Mushrooms, Christmas Trees, Firewood and Hunting Leases.
