into the habit of allowing the child to have its own way when the parent might only see the child a couple of days every few weeks.
It is usually much harder to enforce rules and limits in just a few days, especially if the child is testing the rules.
How many times have I heard a parent say, “She has already been through so much - I don’t want to make it any harder for her.” What this parent is really saying is “I don’t want to upset her so I let her have her own way.”
My reply is “That’s why there are parents!” Their role is to teach the child what is in its best interests.
It may upset the child when we, as parents, enforce rule and limits, but we do it because we love them. In the long run love and limits are paramount in building character and helping the child to grow up healthy, both physically and emotionally.
