The siding of the house will be painted Rookwood Clay; the roof, Rookwood Sash Green; the shutters, Rookwood Blue-Green; the trim, Downing Sand; and the sash and porch floors, Rookwood Terra-Cotta.

"The colors are all appropriate,” Mr. Thomasson said, “and I have no objection to the combination.”

Mrs. Willis said she found the colors hard to visualize mentally, and suggested that, in the future, applicants might submit a snapshot or a rough sketch of the house with the paint scheme.

“That house never would have been painted white,” she added.

Mrs. Parrish said that, apparently, Victorians felt that the houses should blend into the surroundings, and the color schemes used during that period reflected that style.

Mr. Thomasson disagreed, saying that “Rappahannock County is an exception; almost all houses were white before 1900.”

Charles Eldred, general manager of the Washington House of Reproductions, submitted an application for approval of a rebuilding project. His shop was partially destroyed by a fire last Dec. 26. The project is the restoration of the damaged building.

“Perhaps you’d better come up and explain the project,” requested ARB chairman Carol Miller.

“Perhaps you’d better explain the title,” Mr. Thomasson quipped.

Mr. Eldred explained that he intends to raise the roof in the rear of the building to gain a full second floor over the back room,

The chimney will be stone and brick, and several windows will be added on the north side of the house to balance its appearance. A window will also be restored in the back of the building.
