The fragrant aroma of strawberries fills the air, and the mind begins to envision the many ways to eat the tiny, flavor-packed fruit.
Across Virginia, strawberries are available during May and part of June. This, of course, depends upon the location in Virginia and last, but not least, the weather. Locally, the early berries are already available in the roadside stands.
When selecting strawberries, the biggest is not always the best when it comes to delectable flavor. Medium and smaller berries frequently are more flavorful. Buyer beware of fruit-stained cartons. This could be a warning that the berries may be crushed or overripe. Select berries with a bright luster, firm flesh, bright red color, and with the green cap still attached.
Fields will be opening soon for those consumers who are interested in “Pick-Your-Own” berries. Care should be given when selecting containers to take into the field. Remember, these are very delicate
