theme. “Hard Hat” featured arrangements using derbies as their bases, and the entries in that class were displayed on polished brass hat racks.
Another class, “Jumping Fences,” was limited to entries done by men, and “Hunt Picnic” offered an opportunity for juniors age 8 to 11 to join the competition.
The “Mossy Glen” class was restricted to arrangements constructed completely of wildflowers, while “Winner’s Circle” entries were very formal arrangements displayed in gleaming silver containers perched atop elegant white pedestals.
The judges spent nearly four hours scrutinizing the entries, which took up the entire Parish Hall of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington. There were more than 160 exhibits entered in Division II — Horticulture.
Combing through the magnificent entries were judges Mrs. Edwin Eastham of Front Rbyal, Mrs. J. A. Hammer of Luray, Mrs. Edward McAllister of Berryville, and Mrs. J. A. Baden, Mrs. S. O. Bly and Mrs. Richard Lucas, all of Winchester.
Mrs. Helen Fairfax, speaking on behalf of the members of the Garden Club, said that “the club would like to express its appreciation to all those who entered who are not club members, and to especially thank The Inn at Little Washington, which provided a delightful breakfast for the judges who came from outside of the county.”
Rappahannock Elementary’s EMR class, with the assistance of the members of the county’s club, has done a “Learn and Grow” project throughout the year, including the planting of a spring bulb garden which bloomed right outside the classroom window. The youngsters have now become junior garden club members. Their display of the year’s activities, and the junior gardener’s pledge, received a special merit citation.
The club’s Civic Landscaping Project, beautifying the grounds around the Courthouse and the Historical Society building, was also recognized and commended by the judges and was given a merit award. Division I: Design
