Dr. Miller is the only person to receive the school’s distinguished service award twice. It was presented to him in 1968 and 1971. He also received JMU’s commonwealth award for public service in 1980 and Bridgewater College’s outstanding service award in 1979.
He was president and chairman of the board of Shenandoah Valley Educational Television Corp., w'hich founded WVPT-TV, 1965-79 and was a director of the National Public Broadcasting Corp.
In 1968, he was president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Dr. Miller had been married three times.
Elizabeth Thaxton Mauzy, whom he married in 1968, died just this past March 16.
In 1929, he married Kathryn G. Weaver, who died in 1985. In 1947, he married Elise Reaguer, who died in 1956.
Survivors include two sons.
