free entry
All visitors to Shenandoah National Park will be admitted free on Thursday, Aug. 25. To commemorate the 72nd Anniversary of its establishment, the National Park Service will be opening the gates and waiving the entrance fees to all of the National Parks in the United States. For one day, the public will also have free access to all Federal fee areas adminstered by the National Park Service.
Created by an Act of Congress on August 25, 1916, the National Park Service is entrusted with the mission of preserving and providing access to the Nation’s great natural and cultural treasures. The Park Service areas now number 343 and cover more than 60 million acres.
Shenandoah National Park, which was added to the system in 1935, is a Federal fee area, to which the usual entrance fee is $5 for a seven-day stay. Shenandoah has become one of the most popular areas in the system and enjoys an annual visitation of nearly two million people. Shenandoah’s regular visitors and neighbors are cordially invited to join in this celebration and visit the Park at no charge Aug. 25.
