grass is faced with the task of reducing federal spending. That means that many worthwhile programs compete with each other for precious dollars. The legislation I have cosponsored is a comprehensive effort, and it carries a mighty price tag. The money to fund the various components of this bill, and I do not embrace every dot and comma, must be found because the amount of drug money — so-called ’narco-dollars’ — is staggering. We simply must find ways to fund the fight against those narco-dollars and the tremendous influence and power that they can buy.
Takes courage to say “No”
When we hear about the “war on drugs,” we usually think of the men and women in police uniforms leading the assault. But there is another line of assault in Virginia against drugs, and that’s the one going on in many homes and schools.
It takes courage for a young person to say “no” to drugs; the temptation is everywhere and always there. As long as there are willing buyers, young people can make far more money selling drugs than in any legitimate endeavor we can offer them.
But no matter how many gold chains or designer clothes drug money may buy them, we must convince our youths that dealing drugs is the commerce of the corrupt. We must convince them that gold chains and expensive trinkets bought with drug money is nothing but blood money. We must convince them that these symbols of wealth are really
