But, he added, “overall the U. S. government does very well in accounting for its money. Sometimes it’s not spent wisely,” the congressman conceded, “but it’s spent honestly.” However, Mr. Slaughter quickly added, “Don’t use that as an excuse for not doing anything” when waste or abuse is discovered.
Among the audience at the town meeting was a group from Rappahannock County High School which is participating in a program for gifted and talented students this summer. Their teacher, Jon Heddleston, voiced concern about pending legislation to address the expensive issue of child care.
He said he opposes one pending bill which would provide payments to licensed day care centers, but would not allow public funds to be expended for parents who choose inhome or church-sponsored day care.
If there is going to be a tax credit, Mr. Heddleston maintained, “it should go to mothers regardless if they are working outside the home or not.”
Mr. Slaughter supported his argument, adding that by avoiding another government bureauracracy, and providing the money directly to the families, the money would be spent more wisely and efficiently.
Asked about his support for gov emment acquisition of the property adjacent to the Manassas Battlefield Park, where the Hazel/Peterson Company plans to build a huge shopping mall, Mr. Slaughter explained that although he does not favor such government buyouts, the time was so short to make .private acquisition not possible.
And, asked for a prediction on the fall election, Mr. Slaughter smiled and replied, “George Bush will win it.”
