RICHMOND - Older Virginians need to be extra careful during the hot, humid months of summer, the Virginia Department for the Aging warned. As the thermometer climbs, so does the risk of heat stress. Hot weather places dangerous strains on the older person’s body, particularly the heart. Many of the prescription drugs older persons talke lower their ability to handle extremely hot weather, a Department spokesman added.
Heat stress can cause many medical problems included heat stroke and heart failure. Danger signals include dizziness, rapid heartbeat, nausea, a throbbing headache, dry skin without perspiration, chest pains, weakness, breathing problems, cramps and mental confusion.
