helped stretch the lamb’s leg muscles by having them walk and jump.
“And they’re smart,” said Alice. “They really know what’s going on.” Alice, who’s thirteen years old and Robbie, who’s eight, found that the lambs would come when they heard the creak of an old freezer used to store feed.
A tame animal is especially important to a sheep breeder, who must clip and groom it extensively.
At the show, said Alice, “ . . . we’re all friends and try to help each other. It’s a competition, sure, but it’s friendly.”
Alice found that the 4-H leaders were always willing to help. “We’re lucky to have the people we do,” she said. “Randall and Toni and Bill seem to know everything worth knowing about beef or lambs. And they’re always willing to help. Nobody minds if we ask questions and everybody wants us to do well and learn. There’s always someone to go to.”
Although she doesn’t raise hogs, Alice also had praise for Bill Starks, the 4-H hog expert. “He helps out all the kids, from all over,” she said. “He’s real supportive, and always has some constructive criticism. He helps everybody.”
