For homes with air conditioner/heat pump units, maintaining a constant temperature setting on the unit is the most energy-efficient wat to stay comfortable, says Ms. Dagwell. “That’s a major factor in keeping the house cool. Set at around 78 degrees the heat pump will take some of the humidity out of the air so you feel comfortable.” In homes without air conditioners, dehumidifiers are also a good idea, she Ms. Dagwell cautions homeowners against turning the thermostat up in the daytime and down at night because that can ruin the working parts of the air conditioner and the heat pump.
Ms. Dagwell notes that hot, humid conditions may be life threatening as well as uncomfortable. “You have to be particularily careful about temperatures in homes with infants or elderly family members.” Both groups, she notes, “are more likely to be subject to heat stroke than people in the mid-age range.”
