the landfill would be built there, they have worked long and hard to ensure that the Rappahannock landfill will be the best and safest anywhere. No longer can the county sit back and shrug shoulders because a project is in another part of the county. That is what happened to Fairfax and Loudoun Counties. Each project was weighed by the people in that area and the entire county did not get involved. Once a precedent had been set in one area then it was fairly simple for a similar project in another area to be pushed forward. A land use plan is a wonderful instrument, but in so many cases, plans have been altered by the courts or by threat of lawsuit. We all want to be treated fairly and our individual rights must be attended to, but somewhere in our lives the phrase “common good” must be allowed to be heard. Who decides what is good for us?
Finally, we must never let any public debate degenerate into a newcomers versus the oldtimers debacle. Each in our own way has the good of the county at heart and thank heaven, we in this country we can give voice to our differences. The fact that we moved here means the county is growing and that may not be all bad.
If we who do not serve on boards pay more attention, no doubt compromises can be worked out on most projects. Whether you are for or against a particular project means less than putting our heads together for the common good. Rather than assuming that our governing bodies can read our minds, we must be willing to step forward and voice our opinions.
